This is an old Tsuboya ware makai from Okinawa.
The composition of the red painting, which leaves space behind, is excellent, and although it is an old item, it gives a very modern impression and a tasteful appearance that exudes the atmosphere unique to antiques.
Okinawan pottery was originally produced in the Tsuboya area of Naha City. From the Taisho to Showa eras, it became widely known on the mainland as a result of the Mingei movement, and famous pottery craftsmen such as Kinjo Jiro and Kobashigawa Eisho were born there. However, after 1970, wood-fired pottery production was restricted in the Tsuboya area, which was then part of the city, and pottery began to be produced in Yomitan Village, where it remains today.
Okinawan pottery (Yachimun), which is immensely popular as a representative example of folk art tableware, has many attractive pieces that strongly convey Ryukyu culture, both today and in the past.
