This is a paper gunkan made by Yanagiya (1928-2014), a company that restored traditional toys handed down in Inaba region and created original toys.
Unfortunately, the business went out of business about 10 years ago, but this is a toy with a warship motif that was created by Tanaka Tatsunosuke, the first generation owner of Yanagiya.
It was originally built after the great naval battles of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 and 1905, and was large until around 1924, measuring about one meter at the time. The bookmark also states that at the time, it was a common sight in summer to see boys bravely pulling it along unpaved roads chanting "Gunyarase Gunyarase!"
Cannons, waves, and national flags are expressed by dyeing each piece of washi paper.
It has a strong presence and is very much worth displaying, so it is highly recommended as an interior decoration or collection.
