This is an old Sakaiminato ware clay doll that was once made in Sakai, Osaka.
The design is based on the Dutch and Portuguese, who were known as Southern Barbarians, and is unique to this region, which was one of the few open ports in Japan at the time.
As expected, the model was a Southern Barbarian, so while it is generous, it has a foreign atmosphere and modernity that is different from other Japanese clay dolls.
These Nanban dolls went out of production several decades ago, and especially those that include the three figures of a missionary in a black cloak, a Portuguese officer holding a gun and a sailor, and an overcoat-clad man holding a staff and smoking a sailor are extremely rare today.
