This is a 3D puzzle with an elephant motif made by Yamanakagumi Woodworks. This piece was made based on joinery techniques, and while it has a form that is immediately recognizable, the moderately abstract finish that is unique to kumiki is very modern. Although it is an old piece, its perfect design makes it an interior piece that will fit in any space even today. It also functions as a piggy bank.
Joinery, which is assembled using only wood without the use of nails, is recognized as a traditional craft of Odawara City, and from around the Meiji period, Yamanaka Kumiki Kobo began producing kumiki puzzles with a variety of designs, independently developing the technique. The technique was then passed down to the second, third, and fourth generations, and continued to develop, but production ceased in 2013, making it a valuable item today. It is recognized not only as a traditional craft, but also for its design and products, and was highly praised by Bruno Munari, Sori Yanagi, Taro Okamoto, and others.
